Blackberries are Here!

One of my favorite local growers, Stehly Farms Organics, has blackberries!  I tried a basket from their stand at the Palos Verdes Rolling Hills Farmers’ Market two weeks ago and last week picked up another basket at Whole Foods.  Scrumptious!blackberries

Interestingly the 6.0 oz basket from Farmers’ Market was $3.00 and the 5.6 oz basket from Whole Foods was  $3.99 (both from Stehly Farms).  I am a Whole Foods fan and with their commitment to purchasing locally grown organic produce they have earned the respect of many but it is interesting to note the markup.  And I dare say that the berries from Farmers’ Market were fresher – they certainly seemed juicier.

Blackberries are high in antioxidants and one of the top-ranked ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) foods.  They have high nutritional contents of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K,  folic acid and tannins.  If you look up blackberries you’ll find numerous claims of health and nutritional benefits.  Click here and here to read a few.

blackberriesWhether you get them from your local Farmers’ Market or from the store give the locally grown blackberries a try – they are good for you and delicious!

I have tried these as well, and they are delicious. In addition to eating them as is, I top my oatmeal with them as well as in salads.
