10th Annual Chalk Art Festival

Where: Redondo Beach Pier, 100 Fisherman’s Wharf, Redondo Beach, CA 90277  Map It

Artists of all ages are invited to transform the pier into a canvas over the water.  Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories.  Enjoy the art, music and fun followed by the Dolphin Dash at 4:30 (benefits the library) and a free concert on the pier from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

The 7th Annual Dolphin Dash starts at 4:30 pm and goes from the Horseshoe Pier to the International Boardwalk. $10 for individuals, proceeds benefit the Redondo Beach Library FoundationWest Swell, a reggae/rock band from the South Bay, will perform at the free concert beginning at 6:00 pm.

SoLA Food Co-Op Summer Fundraiser

When: Saturday, August 18, 2012 5:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Join celebrity host Vanessa Williams for a food, cooking demos, activities, music and more.  Tickets are $10 – purchase at the door or online.  Proceeds go toward the incorporation and fees to set up the SoLA Food Co-op, an organic, natural, non-GMO food co-op in South Los Angeles.  For more information visit www.solafoodcoop.com.

Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup

When: Saturday, August 18, 2012  10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Where: Will Rogers State Beach, 15800 Pacific Coast Highway (at the end of Temescal Canyon Road), Pacific Palisades, CA 90272  Map It

Join Heal the Bay for their monthly beach cleanup.  Volunteers must be 13 years old OR accompanied by an adult.  Bring your own gloves, reusable water bottle, and trash bucket (or reuse a bag from home).  Bags and gloves will be provided for those who forget to bring their own.  Registration is required and all volunteers must have a signed waiver form.  Please note that parking after 9 am is full price so arrive early to pay the early bird rate or park on the street if you wish to avoid paying full price.

Free Concert in the Park: The Surftunes

When: Sunday, August 19, 2012 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Where: Polliwog Park, 1601 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 Map It

Enjoy a Beach Boys and Surf Music concert in the park (The Surftunes performing) at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach. Set up chairs and blankets on the grass, bring a picnic and enjoy an evening of great music. Fresh Brothers pizza and shaved ice are sold in the gazebo, an ice cream truck parks on Manhattan Beach Blvd. Arrive early as street parking and grass space fills up quickly. It can get chilly in the evening as the park is near the ocean. The concert is free, donations are gratefully accepted. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the grassy picnic area where the concert is held but they are allowed in other parts of the park.

TreePeople Events

When: throughout the week, see the TreePeople calendar

Where: throughout Los Angeles

TreePeople offers a variety of volunteer opportunities including tree planting, tree care, mountain restoration, reforestation, park maintenance, seedling nursery, photography. Minors (accompanied by an adult) are welcome. Visit their calendar to select an activity and sign-up by pre-registering. Once you register, TreePeople will contact you with event details and directions.
