The New Los Angeles Folk Festival

Celebrate the emergence of new LA folk music at the New Los Angeles Folk Festival.  The doors open at 1pm, Festival goes from 2pm-midnight.  In addition to performances by Linda Perhacs, Mia Doi Todd, Robert James and more there will be a beard contest, raffle and other surprises.  The Little Frenchie foodtruck will be serving their delicious French country cooking at the festival.  Tickets are $15/person.  Festival proceeds will be donated to the Environmental Defense Fund’s Gulf Oil Crisis Relief efforts.  For more information visit www.lafolkfest.com.

Downtown Santa Monica Walking Tour

LA City Ranger Family Nature Hike and Nature Education Center

When: Saturday, August 7, 2010  Two hikes – 9am and 12pm
Where: White Point Nature Preserve:  1600 Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will lead two nature hikes through the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 9am and 12pm.  The Preserve features 102 acres of native plants and coastal sage scrub habitat, over 100 species of birds, hiking trails and a new Nature Education Center (adapted from a historic Cold War Assembly building on the site) overlooking the ocean and Catalina Island.   The Center is surrounded by a California native plant demonstration garden.  Materials in the Center’s interior are built out of sustainable products including 100% recycled curbside glass, low carbon concrete counters and natural bamboo cabinets.  The Center is open to the public from 10am-4pm on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.  For more information call 310-541-7613 or visit www.pvplc.org.
