LA City Ranger Family Nature Hike and Nature Education Center

When: Saturday, July 17, 2010  Two hikes – 10am and 11am
Where: White Point Nature Preserve: 1600 Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will lead two nature hikes through the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 10am and 11am.  The Preserve features 102 acres of native plants and coastal sage scrub habitat, over 100 species of birds, hiking trails and a new Nature Education Center (adapted from a historic Cold War Assembly building on the site) overlooking the ocean and Catalina Island.   The Center is surrounded by a California native plant demonstration garden.  Materials in the Center’s interior are built out of sustainable products including 100% recycled curbside glass, low carbon concrete counters and natural bamboo cabinets.  The Center is open to the public from 10am-4pm on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.  For more information call 310-541-7613 or visit

Compost Workshop

Where: Burbank Recycle Center:  500 S. Flower Street, Burbank

Learn how to turn leaves, grass and food scraps into rich soil for your yard.  Workshop is free and fun for the whole family.  Burbank residents will receive a free compost bin.  Call the Burbank Recycle Center to RSVP 818-238-3900.

TYR Playa del Run Beach Festival and Heal the Bay Beach Cleanup

When: Sunday, July 18, 2010
Where: North end of Dockweiler Beach, Playa del Rey

Participate in an Aquathlon (1000m swim + 5 k run), 1 mile swim, 5K run and/or 1 mile sand sprint at Dockweiler Beach in Playa Del Rey and clean up the surrounding beach.  This is the 2nd of a 4 race series in Southern California.  The Heal the Bay Beach cleanup will occur directly after the athletic activities.  Heal the Bay‘s cleanups are hands-on opportunities for volunteers to directly improve the conditions of Santa Monica Bay beaches while enjoying the great outdoors.  For directions, parking and more information visit
