Downtown Santa Monica Walking Tour

LA City Ranger Family Nature Hike and Nature Education Center

When: Saturday, July 31, 2010  Two hikes – 9am and 12pm
Where: White Point Nature Preserve:  1600 Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will lead two nature hikes through the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 9am and 12pm.  The Preserve features 102 acres of native plants and coastal sage scrub habitat, over 100 species of birds, hiking trails and a new Nature Education Center (adapted from a historic Cold War Assembly building on the site) overlooking the ocean and Catalina Island.   The Center is surrounded by a California native plant demonstration garden.  Materials in the Center’s interior are built out of sustainable products including 100% recycled curbside glass, low carbon concrete counters and natural bamboo cabinets.  The Center is open to the public from 10am-4pm on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.  For more information call 310-541-7613 or visit

National Farmers Market Week

To further awareness of farmers markets and of the contributions farmers make to daily life in America, the Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture has proclaimed the week of August 1-7, 2010 as National Farmers Market Week.  People are encouraged to celebrate the benefits of farmers markets by supporting the vendors and activities at local Farmers’ Markets.  For more information visit the USDA Farmers Market website.

Descanso Gardens Discoveries Day Camp

When: Monday, August 2, 2010 – Friday, August 6, 2010  9am-3pm
Where: Descanso Gardens:  1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge
