Heal the Bay White Party

Join Heal the Bay on Friday, September 3, 2010 for the event of the summer with poolside dancing under the stars at Shangri-La Hotel in Santa Monica.  “The White Party” has raised over $50,000 in proceeds for Heal the Bay over the past 5 years.  RSVP – guest list only event.  $40 cash donation at the door.  There will be a selection of sponsored cocktails, tray passed appetizers and the groovy beats from 7pm-9pm.  The first 150 guests will receive a special gift bag from Strange Invisibles Perfumes.  For more information and to RSVP please go to Heal the Bay White Party.

Explore the varied ecosystems of land and sea, and discover how the physical and living worlds are connected and shaped by the same fundamental ecological principles. Ecosystems invites you to explore environments that range from the most ordinary and domestic to the most remote and inhospitable. Investigate the gallery’s eight Zones, each of which illustrates a different ecological principle: extreme zone, forest zone, river zone, island zone, rot room, global zone, L.A. zone and family discovery room. Mummies of the World

When: Daily until September 25, 2010: Monday – Thursday 10am – 5pm, Friday – Sunday 10am – 7pm
Where: California Science Center: 700 Exposition Park Drive (39th Street and Figueroa Street), Los Angeles

Mummies of the World, the largest traveling exhibition of mummies ever assembled, presents a never-before-seen collection of both accidental and intentionally preserved mummies, presented with reverence and dignity. The collection includes ancient mummies and important artifacts from Asia, Oceania, South America, and Europe as well as ancient Egypt, dating as far back as 6,500 years. Parking is $8. Admission is $19.50 for adults, $12.50 for children 4-12, $16.50 for youths 13-17 and seniors 60+. Hours are subject to change. To verify hours call 323-724-3623. Sierra Club Hike – Topanga State Park to Parket Mesa Overlook (Pacific Palisades)

When: Fridays 6:45 pm
Where: Meet @ Los Liones Drive at Sunset Blvd for rideshare to trailhead

Long Beach Museum of Art – Free Fridays

When: Fridays 11am – 5pm
Where: Long Beach Museum of Art: 2300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach

The Long Beach Museum of Art is located on a magnificent bluff-top site overlooking Long Beach Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus includes the historic Elizabeth Milbank Anderson house and carriage house (built in 1912), oceanfront gardens, and a pavilion with two floors of expansive gallery space for changing exhibitions. The historic buildings are home to administrative offices and Restaurant. In addition to changing exhibitions, the Museum offers extensive educational programs for children and adults, musical programs, festivals, and other special events. Open Tuesday – Sunday from 11am – 5pm. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students/seniors and free for members and children under 12. Admission is free for all every Friday. 2010 Los Angeles Green Fair

Sierra Club Hike – Long Beach El Dorado Nature Center Walk

Downtown Santa Monica Walking Tour

Where: Hostelling International Lobby: 1436 2nd Street, Santa Monica

Explore more than 130 years of Santa Monica history from its Wild West frontier beginnings to the metropolis of today. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for Santa Monica Conservancy members for this two hour six block tour of downtown Santa Monica. LA City Ranger Family Nature Hike and Nature Education Center

When: Saturday, September 4, 2010 Two hikes – 9am and 12pm
Where: White Point Nature Preserve: 1600 Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will lead two nature hikes through the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 9am and 12pm. The Preserve features 102 acres of native plants and coastal sage scrub habitat, over 100 species of birds, hiking trails and a new Nature Education Center (adapted from a historic Cold War Assembly building on the site) overlooking the ocean and Catalina Island. The Center is surrounded by a California native plant demonstration garden. Materials in the Center’s interior are built out of sustainable products including 100% recycled curbside glass, low carbon concrete counters and natural bamboo cabinets. Join a senior Girl Scout for a fun family hike for elementary school kids and their families through the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 10am. The Young Explorer Hike will explore all the sights, smells and sounds at White Point.  Kids will ear their own explorer badge.

Sierra Club Hike – Sullivan Canyon and Marlen’s Favorite Hike

When: Saturday, September 4, 2010 8:30 am
Where: Meet @ the end of Queensferry Road

Join the Sierra Club for a 9 mile moderate hike on ridges above and in Sullivan Canyon ending with Marlen’s Favorite Hike which encompasses remains of former Nazi encampment in Rustic Canyon, plus two hidden 500 step staircases (one up, one down). Free Solar Energy Workshop

Join Open Neighborhoods at the Mar Vista Community Council Green Booth on Sunday, September 5th from 9am-2pm and learn the basics of solar power and how our communities are going solar together to save on electricity. The GoSolar program is available to area residents and business owners for a limited time and provides the best pricing we have seen with immediate savings and no upfront costs.

Local residents will be present throughout the morning to share what they have learned and how much they are already saving on their utility bill. Solar experts from Martifer Solar will be available to answer any of your questions and explain the options that are currently available.

There will be two brief presentations at 10am and 11am with Q&A for both commercial/residential interested participants with real world solutions.

Martifer Solar USA will demonstrate innovations in solar technology and explain group pricing for the GoSolar MarVista program that lets you go solar for less than your electric bill.

Anyone who stops by the booth on Sunday, September 5th is eligible to receive a Free Solar Assessment on their home or business, or can do so now by visiting the neighborhood GoSolar site.
