No on 37 Ads: Things That Make You Go Hmmm

Just a few days after airing their first television spots opposing Prop 37, the No on 37 camp was forced to remove one of their ads for misrepresenting Stanford University.

The ad that was yanked from the airwaves featured “Dr. Henry I. Miller M.D., Stanford University, Founding Dir., FDA Office of Biotechnology” standing in a walkway at Stanford University.

In the ad Miller claims that the Prop 37 ballot measure is arbitrary and illogical and “makes no sense at all” because it requires that some foods be labeled while others are exempted.

Note: Exemptions include food sold in restaurants, alcohol and animals (e.g., beef, chicken, turkey).  Confused?  We didn’t think so.

Ironically, what makes no sense at all is why the No on 37 campaign selected Miller as spokesperson for their ad.  Miller is not a Stanford professor as the ad might lead you to believe.  He is a research fellow at the right-wing Hoover Institution, a conservative public policy think tank housed at Stanford University.

Furthermore, the ad violates university policy which doesn’t allow use of the Stanford name by consultants, doesn’t take positions on candidates or ballot measures, and does not allow political filming on campus.

At Stanford’s request, the No on 37 campaign removed the ad and edited it so that Miller is now identified as “Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Founding Dir., FDA Office of Biotechnology” and the campus behind Miller has been bluescreened in with a genertic non-university building.

With over $35 million in contributions, this was the best the No on 37 campaign could do?  The guy who, during his time at the FDA, helped to implement the very loophole that has kept us in the dark about the dangers of GMOs?

The guy who says it’s too late and too costly to reduce emissions and instead we should focus on “adapting to a hotter world”?

But wait.  There’s more.  Miller also has a long history of working to undermine our health.

It’s clear which side Miller is on and it’s not the side of public health and safety.
