What does FSC certified mean?

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council.  FSC is an independent, non-profit organization that promotes responsible forest management and protects forests for future generations.  FSC certified wood comes from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.

Why do you use FSC certified Western Red Cedar for your compost bins and planters?

First let’s talk about FSC certification.  We’ve chosen to use FSC certified wood for our garden products because we feel that it is important to protect our forests.  The forests are the lungs of our planet.  For one of the best explanations of why we should buy FSC wood watch this entertaining guide to FSC by author and illustrator Franke James:

We’ve chosen untreated FSC Western Red Cedar because it is sustainably harvested, durable, and naturally rot and insect resistant.  Thanks to it’s natural rot and insect resistance it can be left unfinished so that no potentially toxic chemicals are in contact with your soil, plants, or compost.  Over time the wood will weather to a soft gray.

Which worms are best for composting?

Red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are the best composting worm for many reasons.  They are easy to raise, extremely prolific, and can eat at least half their weight in food scraps per day.  In ideal conditions they can eat as much as their own body weight in one day.

What should I feed my worms?

Red wigglers will eat most any organic (biodegradable) materials, but prefer a vegetarian diet.  Start with small quantities of each item to see what they like.  We’ve noticed that they are very fond of pumpkin, melon (including the rind), corn on the cob, and banana peel.

Food to feed your worms:

  • fruit & vegetable scraps
  • crushed egg shells
  • coffee grounds
  • tea bags
  • cardboard, egg cartons, paper towel roll holders, toilet paper roll holders (shred first)
  • newspaper, black & white junk mail (shred first)
  • dry yard clippings
  • tiny amounts of grains occasionally (too many can mold and make inhospitable conditions for your worms)

Items you should not feed your worms:

  • meat and seafood
  • dairy
  • oils and fats
  • acidic fruits and citrus
  • onions, garlic & very spicy peppers
  • processed foods
  • paper with colored ink
  • anything that is not biodegradable

Cedar planks, worms and other merchandise are shipped via USPS.  Worm orders ship early in the week to ensure same week delivery.

Compost bins and raised bed planters are local delivery items only.  Upon receipt of your order we will contact you to arrange delivery.

Items fulfilled by Amazon are shipped via your choice of shipping method.

What does “local delivery only” mean?

Our compost bins and raised bed planters are only available for delivery to Los Angeles county and the northern portion of Orange County.  For a map of our delivery zone click here.

I really want a compost bin/raised bed planter but I’m not in your delivery zone.  Would you please ship it to me?

Unfortunately we do not offer shipping of our compost bins and raised bed planters at this time.  We hand-make and pre-assemble each one and they are too large to ship economically.  Our $20 flat rate delivery fee (within our delivery zone) includes set up wherever you plan to put your bin or planter.  We also offer organic planting mix to fill your planters.

Do you offer shipping outside of the U.S.?

At present, EcoBuzz does not ship to addresses outside of the U.S.

Do you collect sales tax?

State and local sales tax is collected on orders shipped within the state of California.

How can I cancel my order?

To cancel an order before it has shipped, please email us or give us a call at (310) 548-9500.  Please note that EcoBuzz cannot cancel an order after the item has been shipped.

How can I return merchandise?

Cedar Planks:  Please refer to the return instructions on your packing slip.  Refunds will be processed within 24 hours upon receipt of the returned planks.  We do not refund shipping charges unless the item arrives damaged.

Compost Bins:  Compost bins are a local delivery item and cannot be returned after delivery and acceptance.  If you decide you do not wish to keep the bin upon delivery, please let the driver know before accepting delivery and a refund will be processed with 24 hours.  We do not refund delivery charges unless the item arrives damaged.

Compost Worms:  Our worms are guaranteed to be delivered alive.  In the case of the worms not arriving alive, we will either refund your money or reship the worms to you.  For the live guarantee to be valid, the worms have to be signed for and accepted on the first delivery attempt.  To ensue that your worms arrive in good condition, we may delay shipment if the weather conditions are extremely hot or cold.

Please make sure that someone is at your address to receive the delivery.  If nobody will be available to accept the worms,  please instruct us to write, “HOLD AT POST OFFICE FOR CUSTOMER PICKUP” on the outside of your box when you place your order.  We will then guarantee the worms for 24 hours at the Post Office, allowing you plenty of time to pick up your worms.

Failure to accept the worms on the first delivery, or failure to pick up the worms within 24 hours at the post office will void the Live Arrival Guarantee.

Please let us know immediately upon receiving the product if there are any problems with your order.

We will consider that the worms have been delivered alive unless we are notified within 3 hours of the time that the carrier scans or enters them in as delivered. Please do not dispose of the worms or the original package until you contact us.

Raised Bed Planters:  Raised bed planters are a local delivery item and cannot be returned after delivery and acceptance.  If you decide you do not wish to keep the bin upon delivery, please let the driver know before accepting delivery and a refund will be processed with 24 hours.  We do not refund delivery charges unless the item arrives damaged.
