What’s in Season in August?

Strawberries!!  Really!!

Strawberries Farmers Market

We’ve had a very mild summer in Southern California (so far). I don’t know how that has impacted the local crops but it seems to be extending the season for some of the fruits and vegetables.  Most notably strawberries!  There are still beautiful baskets of strawberries to be found but not for long I suspect.

In August you’ll find a terrific selection of most fruits and vegetables.  Not much is missing.  Apples are starting to show up – yeah!  I’ve missed local apples and so have the kids.  There are still peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots everywhere you look.  The plums and pluots I tried on Sunday were so sweet and juicy.  The kids couldn’t get enough of the nectarine samples from Nicholas Family Farms.

Nectarines Farmers Market

Lots of leafy greens, green beans, tomatoes, beets, onions and summer squash.  We saw a huge variety of summer squash – all colors and shapes.

Vegatables and Flowers Farmers Market

Sadly gone this month are the cherries.  Bye bye cherries – see you next summer.
